What Is Freckle & Sun Spot Removal?

A non-invasive laser treatment for pigmentation

At Aesthetic Beauty Lab in Apple Valley, MN, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus to target and fade unwanted pigmentation caused by overactive melanocytes. The treatment is non-invasive, requires no downtime, and uses selective photothermolysis to break down pigment particles for natural clearance over 1 to 2 weeks.

The Alexandrite 755 nm wavelength is best suited for Fitzpatrick skin types I to III (lighter skin tones with surface pigmentation). Most clients see visible fading after the first session, with optimal results at 6 to 12 weeks.

Serving Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Lakeville, Rosemount, Farmington, Bloomington, Prior Lake, Savage, Minneapolis, and Saint Paul.

Step by Step

How laser pigmentation removal works at ABL

01

Consultation

We evaluate your Fitzpatrick skin type, the pigmentation you want to address, and confirm you are a candidate for the Alexandrite 755 nm wavelength.

02

Targeted Pulse

The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus delivers selective light energy to each pigmented spot. Pigment absorbs the energy; surrounding skin is spared.

03

DCD Cooling

A cryogen burst cools the skin before each pulse, protecting the surface and keeping treatment comfortable. No numbing required.

04

Natural Fading

Spots darken briefly, then flake or fade over 1 to 2 weeks. Repeat every 4 weeks. Full results visible at 6 to 12 weeks.

What We Treat

Pigmentation we treat

Small flat brown spots, whether you have always had them or developed them with sun exposure. The Candela laser fades or eliminates them for a more even complexion.

UV-induced pigmentation from years of sun exposure. This is the medical name for sun-driven pigment spots, and they respond predictably to laser treatment.

Pigmentation that accumulates with aging skin. Laser treatment lifts these spots, revealing clearer skin underneath for a refreshed appearance.

Flat darkened patches typically on hands, face, and chest. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus precisely targets and clears them.

Freckles, sun spots or melasma? Why it matters

TypeWhat it looks likeWhat causes itLaser at ABL?
FrecklesSmall, flat, light to medium brown dotsGenetics plus sun exposureYes, great response
Sun spots and age spotsFlat brown spots on sun exposed areasYears of UV exposureYes, great response
MelasmaLarger patches, often on cheeks, forehead and upper lipHormones, heat and sunNeeds a different plan. We usually start with chemical peels and medical-grade skincare. See melasma treatment

Any spot that is new, changing, bleeding or irregular in shape or color should be checked by a dermatologist before any laser treatment. We only treat spots that look like harmless sun pigment, and we will refer you if something needs a closer look.

Why fall and winter are the best time in Minnesota

Laser pigment treatment works best when your skin is not tanned and you can avoid strong sun while it heals. That makes October through March the ideal window in the Twin Cities. Start your series in the fall and your skin is clear and even by spring and summer.

How to prepare

  • Avoid tanning, spray tans and self tanner for 2 weeks before treatment.
  • Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids for a few days before, or as your provider directs.
  • Come with clean skin, no makeup or lotion on the treatment area.
  • Tell us about any medications, especially ones that increase sun sensitivity.

Aftercare

  • Let treated spots darken and flake naturally. Do not pick or scrub.
  • Avoid sun, hot showers, saunas and exfoliants for 7 days.
  • Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. Our pick for deeper skin tones: Revision Intellishade Clear SPF 50, no white cast.
  • Book your next session 4 weeks later if more fading is needed.

Options for deeper skin tones

The Alexandrite 755 nm wavelength is not recommended for Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin because it can cause unwanted pigment changes. If you have a deeper skin tone, we will build a safer plan with options such as chemical peels, HydraFacial and medical-grade skincare to even your tone.

Our Candela GentleMax Pro Plus uses the Alexandrite 755 nm wavelength, which is best suited for Fitzpatrick skin types I to III (lighter skin tones with surface pigmentation). If you have a deeper skin tone (Fitzpatrick IV to VI), this specific treatment is not recommended for you, as it may cause unwanted pigment changes. We will evaluate your skin type during your consultation and recommend the safest, most effective option for your goals.

Four main causes. (1) Sun exposure: UV radiation is the biggest driver of surface pigmentation. Cumulative damage triggers excess melanin production. (2) Aging: melanocytes become irregular and deposit pigment unevenly over decades. (3) Genetics: some people are predisposed to freckles and pigmented lesions regardless of sun exposure. (4) Hormonal changes: pregnancy, birth control, and menopause can trigger melasma and uneven pigmentation.

Treated spots typically darken for 24 to 72 hours, then naturally flake or fade over 1 to 2 weeks. Sessions repeat every 4 weeks. Most clients see optimal results at 6 to 12 weeks. There is no downtime, so you can return to normal activities immediately.

Pricing varies by area. Small areas (single spot, nose, chin, hands) are $150 per session. Medium areas (full face, neck, chest, forearms) are $300. Large areas (face plus neck, full chest, upper back) are $400. Final pricing is confirmed during your consultation.

Most clients see significant fading after the first session. Depending on the density of pigmentation and area treated, 1 to 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart typically produce optimal results. Heavier sun damage may benefit from additional sessions.

Most clients describe each pulse as a quick rubber-band snap followed immediately by cooling. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus includes a built-in Dynamic Cooling Device that protects the skin and keeps discomfort minimal. No topical numbing is typically needed.

No downtime. Most clients return to normal activities immediately. Avoid sun exposure, hot showers, saunas, and exfoliants for 7 days. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily to protect your results.

Spots successfully treated by the laser are gone. However, new pigmentation can form with continued UV exposure or hormonal changes. Daily SPF and ongoing sun protection are essential to maintain your results. Genetic freckles may gradually return with significant sun exposure.

Yes. We treat pigmentation on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back, hands and arms. Hands and chest are some of the most common areas for sun spots and respond well to the Candela laser.

Treated pigment clears, but new spots can form with future sun exposure or hormonal changes, and genetic freckles may return with a lot of sun. Daily SPF and a yearly touch up session keep your skin clear.

Melasma behaves differently from freckles and sun spots and can get worse with heat. We usually treat melasma with chemical peels, gentle facials and medical-grade skincare instead. We confirm what you have at your consultation.
