Contour and TMJ Facial Slimming uses neurotoxin (Botox, Jeuveau or Dysport) injected into the masseter muscles along the jawline. Over time the muscles relax and gradually reduce in size, which eases jaw tension, reduces clenching and grinding, and creates a slimmer lower face. Note that this is an off-label use: these products are FDA-approved for frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines, and Botox is separately approved for chronic migraine and axillary hyperhidrosis, but not for TMJ or facial slimming. Masseter treatment is a well-established technique in aesthetic practice, and off-label use by a qualified provider is legal, but you should know which is which before you consent.

Both, and most clients get some of each. Many come for jaw tension, clenching, teeth grinding and jaw-related headaches. Others come for the slimmer, more contoured jawline. Because the treatment works by relaxing the same muscle, you generally get both effects together, though how much of each varies by person.

The appointment is about 45 minutes including consultation, palpating and marking the muscle, and injections. Relief from clenching and grinding is usually noticed within one to two weeks. Visible facial slimming takes longer, typically six to eight weeks, as the muscle gradually reduces in size with reduced use.

Most clients get three to four months from a treatment, and some get longer once they have had several sessions and the muscle has reduced. Rebooking around the three to four month mark maintains TMJ relief. Slimming results tend to build across sessions, so intervals can sometimes lengthen over time. Pricing is per unit: Botox $14, Dysport and Jeuveau $13. Most clients need 40 to 60 units total, roughly 20 to 30 per side, with larger or more developed masseters needing more. That puts a typical Botox treatment at about $560 to $840. Dysport units are not equivalent to Botox units, so compare the total quoted price rather than the per-unit price. You receive a specific quote at consultation before anything is injected.

The masseter is a chewing muscle and does not control your smile or facial expressions, so a correctly placed treatment leaves them intact. The caveat worth knowing: the risorius muscle, which does affect smiling, sits near the masseter, so placement matters. This is why we palpate and mark the muscle while you clench rather than injecting by eye. If a smile does become uneven it is temporary and resolves as the product wears off, and you should contact us.

We will not treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a known allergy to any botulinum toxin product or its components including human albumin, have a neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome or ALS, or have an infection or active skin condition at the injection sites. Dysport specifically contains cow's milk protein and is not used in anyone with that allergy. Tell your injector about all medications, particularly aminoglycoside antibiotics and blood thinners, and about any previous reaction to a neurotoxin treatment.

Common and temporary effects include bruising, swelling and tenderness at the injection sites, and headache in the first days. Specific to masseter treatment, some clients notice temporary chewing fatigue with tough foods such as steak, gum or bagels during the first few weeks, and occasionally an asymmetric or altered smile if product affects nearby muscles, which resolves as it wears off. Over-treating across many sessions can in some cases affect the appearance of the mid-face, which is why dosing should be conservative and spaced appropriately. All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning about distant spread of toxin effect: rarely, effects can spread beyond the injection site hours to weeks afterward and cause muscle weakness or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Seek immediate medical attention for any difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing.

No. Masseter treatment reduces the force of clenching and grinding, but it is not a substitute for dental care, and it does not treat an underlying joint problem, a bite issue or existing tooth damage. Many clients use it alongside a night guard rather than instead of one.
