What Is SkinPen Microneedling?

FDA-cleared collagen induction therapy

At Aesthetic Beauty Lab in Apple Valley, MN, SkinPen microneedling uses sterile single-use needle cartridges to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. That triggers your body's repair response and stimulates new collagen and elastin, which is what improves texture, pores, and acne scarring over time.

Plan for the downtime and the timeline. Expect redness like a mild to moderate sunburn for 24 to 72 hours, with tightness and light flaking after. No makeup for 24 hours. Collagen remodeling continues for 3 to 6 months, so this is not a treatment you judge from one session. Most people need a series of three, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Want to go further? PRF microneedling adds platelet-rich fibrin from your own blood for $550 per session. It is most worth the extra cost for deeper acne scarring; for mild to moderate concerns, standard SkinPen is usually the better value.

What It Addresses

Concerns microneedling works on

Microneedling is a well-established option for atrophic acne scarring. It breaks up scar tissue and prompts collagen to remodel the depression. Rolling and boxcar scars respond better than deep icepick scars, which often need a different approach. Expect a series, and expect it to take months.

Rough or bumpy skin smooths as new collagen forms. This is one of the more reliable outcomes, and it builds over successive treatments rather than appearing after one.

Collagen forming around the pore opening can make pores appear smaller. Pore size is largely genetic, so the realistic goal is visible improvement in appearance rather than eliminating them.

Fine lines and crepey texture soften as collagen and elastin rebuild over several months. Deeper expression lines are generally better addressed with neurotoxin, and true laxity with a collagen stimulator such as Sculptra.

Many clients report firmer, more even, better-reflecting skin after a full series. That is the cumulative effect of collagen remodeling over months, not a single dramatic change.

Microneedling is not a first-line treatment for pigmentation, and it can make melasma worse. The controlled inflammation that drives collagen also drives pigment production, so melasma can rebound and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can develop, particularly in deeper skin tones. If pigmentation is your main concern, a VI Peel is usually the better starting point. Microneedling can still help the textural damage left by old acne, which is a different problem from the dark marks.

Every Skin Tone

Microneedling for every skin tone

SkinPen uses no heat and no light. It works through tiny channels that trigger your own collagen, which is why microneedling is often a good choice for deeper skin tones, where some lasers carry more risk of dark spots.

We still plan carefully for every skin type (Fitzpatrick I to VI). We choose needle depth for your skin and concern, avoid over-treating, prep your skin beforehand, and send you home with strict SPF and aftercare to lower the risk of dark marks after irritation.

SkinPen uses sterile single-use needle cartridges to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin at a depth chosen for your concern. Those micro-injuries trigger the body's repair response, which stimulates new collagen and elastin. Treatment takes about 45 to 60 minutes including numbing, and most clients describe the sensation as sandpaper pressure rather than sharp pain.

Most skin types and tones can be treated. We cannot treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active breakout, skin infection, or cold sore in the area, have an active eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea flare, have used isotretinoin in the past 6 months, have open wounds or a compromised skin barrier, take blood-thinning medication, or have a bleeding disorder. Tell us about any history of keloid scarring or cold sores, since microneedling can trigger a cold sore outbreak and antiviral medication may be recommended beforehand.

Yes. Expect redness resembling a mild to moderate sunburn for 24 to 72 hours, along with tightness and light flaking in the days after. No makeup for 24 hours. Avoid sun, heat, saunas, heavy exercise, and active skincare until your skin settles. Most clients book with several days before any event.

Results build progressively. In the first few days, redness resolves and skin often looks refreshed. Around one to two weeks, many clients notice brightness and smoother surface texture. Real change in texture, pores, and scarring comes from collagen remodeling, which continues for 3 to 6 months after treatment. For that reason we recommend a series of three sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart rather than judging results from one visit.

A single SkinPen session is $350 at Aesthetic Beauty Lab in Apple Valley, MN. A series of three is $900, which is $150 less than booking three separately. Adding PRF, drawn from your own blood, is $550 per session or $1,500 for three. Adding the neck is $450 per session or $1,200 for three, or $650 per session or $1,800 for three with PRF.

We apply topical numbing for about 20 minutes beforehand. Most clients describe the sensation as sandpaper pressure or prickling rather than sharp pain. Bonier areas such as the forehead and jawline tend to be more noticeable, and deeper settings used for scarring are felt more than lighter ones. Tell your provider if it becomes uncomfortable and we will adjust depth or pace.

PRF microneedling adds platelet-rich fibrin from your own blood to support the healing response, and it is most worth the extra cost for deeper concerns such as significant acne scarring. For mild to moderate texture, pores, and fine lines, standard SkinPen at $350 is usually the better value. We will tell you which fits at consultation rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.

Generally no, and this is worth being clear about. Microneedling is not a first-line treatment for pigmentation, and because it creates controlled inflammation it can worsen melasma or trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in deeper skin tones. If pigmentation is your main concern, a VI Peel is usually the better starting point. Microneedling can still help with the texture left behind by old acne, which is a different problem from the dark marks.

Yes, when it is planned carefully. SkinPen uses no heat or light, so it is often a good option for deeper skin tones. We adjust depth for your skin and give you strict aftercare to lower the risk of dark marks.

Microneedling is best for acne scars, texture and pores because it builds collagen. Chemical peels are often better for pigment, dullness and tone. Many clients combine both in a plan.

This page is for general information and is not medical advice. Microneedling is a clinical procedure that creates controlled injury to the skin. Results vary by individual and are not guaranteed; collagen remodeling is gradual and most clients need a series. Risks include redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, bruising, prolonged irritation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (higher in deeper skin tones), cold sore reactivation, and, rarely, infection or scarring. Microneedling is not a first-line treatment for melasma and may worsen it. A consultation and medical history review are required, and several conditions and medications make treatment unsafe. Pricing is current as of August 2026 and subject to change.
