What Is the VI Peel?
At Aesthetic Beauty Lab in Apple Valley, MN, the VI Peel is a professional-strength chemical peel that works at a medium depth, deeper than anything available over the counter. The blend of TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C resurfaces the skin to reveal fresher, more even-toned skin underneath.
Six formulas let your provider match the peel to your concern, including Precision Plus and the newer, hydroquinone-free Precision + Peptides for melasma and stubborn hyperpigmentation.
Plan for the peeling. Your skin will visibly flake and peel for roughly 5 to 7 days. You can work and go out, but it is noticeable, so book at least a week before any event or photos. This is not a lunchtime facial.
The VI Peel Formulas
The classic. Best for first-time peel clients and mild signs of aging. A balanced formula that resurfaces, brightens, and refines without overcorrecting, a sensible introduction to medical-grade peels.
Aimed at moderate fine lines and texture. Boosted with retinoic acid and antioxidants, it is used to support collagen renewal and smooth surface texture over a series rather than in one session.
The long-standing pigmentation formula, for sun damage, melasma, and uneven tone. Its brightening system is built on hydroquinone and kojic acid. That matters when choosing between this and Precision + Peptides below: some clients prefer or need to avoid hydroquinone, and long-term continuous use is not recommended without provider oversight.
VI’s newest pigmentation formula, and hydroquinone-free. It uses hexylresorcinol alongside Smart Peptide Technology, a retinoid accelerator, and antioxidant brighteners to target pigment while supporting the skin barrier. A good option for melasma and sun damage, particularly if you would rather not use hydroquinone. Your provider will help you weigh this against Precision Plus.
For active acne. Salicylic acid decongests pores and reduces inflammation while resurfacing the skin. Suited to mild and moderate breakouts; cystic or severe acne needs a dermatologist rather than a peel.
The dual-action option, and VI’s most comprehensive peel. Combines the acne-clearing side of Purify with the hydroquinone-free pigment system of Precision + Peptides. Built for clients dealing with active breakouts alongside post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the dark marks left behind after acne) and textural acne scarring.
Melasma Treatment in Apple Valley, MN
Melasma is the most stubborn form of hyperpigmentation: gray-brown patches across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and bridge of the nose, driven by sun exposure and hormones. We treat it with VI’s pigment formulas (Precision Plus, or the newer hydroquinone-free Precision + Peptides) alongside a maintenance and sun-protection plan, working to fade pigment gradually over a series rather than promising to erase it.
Step 01
Every melasma case is different. At consultation we evaluate your skin type, how deep the pigment sits, and what triggers it, then map a plan to your pattern, including whether a peel is the right first move at all.
Step 02
Precision Plus or Precision + Peptides delivers brightening agents to target pigment, in a series spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. We start conservatively on purpose: pushing too hard on melasma tends to backfire.
Step 03
Melasma is chronic and sun-driven, so daily broad-spectrum SPF is not optional. It is the part that determines whether your results hold. Maintenance is built into every plan.
What we will tell you honestly: melasma can be visibly improved but not cured, and it commonly returns after sun exposure, pregnancy, or hormonal changes. Chemical peels can also make melasma worse. Inflammation triggers more pigment, so a peel that is too aggressive, or sun exposure while you are healing, can cause it to rebound. That risk is higher in deeper skin tones. It is why we start slowly, space treatments out, and are strict about sun protection. If your melasma is severe or has rebounded from treatment before, we may recommend seeing a dermatologist for physician-directed care instead of, or alongside, peels.

Every Skin Tone Welcome
The VI Peel is formulated for use across Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI and is a common choice for hyperpigmentation and melasma on deeper skin tones. Because temporary darkening is more likely in Fitzpatrick IV to VI, we start with a consultation, prep your skin and set aftercare that protects your results.

VI Aesthetics now offers two pigment formulas: Precision Plus, which uses hydroquinone and kojic acid, and the newer Precision + Peptides, which is hydroquinone-free and built on hexylresorcinol with Smart Peptide Technology. Both are used for melasma. Which one suits you depends on your skin, your history with hydroquinone, and whether you have treated melasma before. Either way, melasma responds best to a series spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart combined with daily broad-spectrum sun protection, and we may recommend starting conservatively.
No. Melasma is chronic, driven by sun exposure and hormones, and cannot be permanently cured. The realistic goal is to fade existing pigment and keep it from returning through maintenance and daily SPF. Results vary considerably between individuals, and melasma commonly recurs after sun exposure, pregnancy, or hormonal changes.
It can, which is why melasma is treated cautiously. Any inflammation of the skin can trigger more pigment production, so a peel that is too aggressive, or sun exposure during healing, can cause melasma to rebound or darken. That risk is higher in deeper skin tones. We start conservatively, space treatments appropriately, and require strict sun protection during and after your series. If your melasma is severe or has rebounded before, we may recommend seeing a dermatologist for physician-directed treatment instead of, or alongside, peels.
The VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel from VI Aesthetics, formerly the Vitality Institute, applied in layers as a blend of TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C. You will feel tingling during application, and the skin frosts as the peel takes effect. The solution is left on and washed off at home per your provider's instruction. Day 1 is typically mild redness, days 2 to 3 deepen, active peeling runs roughly days 3 to 7, and fresh skin emerges after that.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. You can go about your normal routine, but the skin visibly flakes and peels for about 5 to 7 days, and how noticeable that is varies by person. Most clients schedule a peel with at least a week before any event or photos. It is not a lunchtime treatment.
Original suits first-time peel clients and mild signs of aging. Precision targets moderate fine lines and texture. Precision Plus is the long-standing pigmentation formula and uses hydroquinone. Precision + Peptides is the newer hydroquinone-free pigmentation formula, built on hexylresorcinol and Smart Peptide Technology. Purify treats active acne. Purify with Precision + Peptides handles active acne together with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. Your provider recommends the formula at consultation.
The VI Peel is formulated for use across Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI, and it is a common choice for pigmentation in deeper skin. It is not risk-free: any chemical peel carries a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, meaning temporary darkening, and that risk is higher in Fitzpatrick IV through VI. We manage it by starting conservatively, keeping intervals appropriate, and insisting on daily sun protection. We will tell you honestly if we think a gentler approach fits your skin better.
Most people are, but we cannot treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have used isotretinoin within the past 6 months, have an active cold sore or skin infection in the treatment area, have a known allergy to aspirin, salicylates, or any peel ingredient, or have recent sun exposure or sunburn. Tell us about any history of cold sores, since a peel can trigger an outbreak and antiviral medication may be recommended beforehand. Every client is assessed at consultation.
A single VI Peel is $350, including the VI Derm aftercare kit. A series of three is $900, which is $150 less than booking three separately. Melasma and stubborn pigmentation generally need the series rather than a single peel.
Most clients describe mild tingling or warmth for a few minutes during application. Active peeling on days 3 to 7 can feel tight and itchy rather than painful. You go home with the VI Derm aftercare kit to keep the skin comfortable. Tell your provider if the sensation becomes sharp or burning during application.
Do not pick, pull, or scrub peeling skin. That is the most common cause of scarring and post-inflammatory pigment. Keep skin moisturized with the aftercare kit, apply broad-spectrum SPF every day, and avoid direct sun, saunas, hot yoga, heavy sweating, and any other exfoliant until peeling has finished. Resume retinoids only when your provider clears you.
This page is for general information and is not medical advice. The VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel; results vary by individual and are not guaranteed. Melasma is a chronic condition that can be improved but not cured, and it can recur or worsen with sun exposure, pregnancy, or hormonal changes. All chemical peels carry risks including redness, irritation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, cold sore reactivation, and, rarely, scarring. A consultation is required, and some conditions and medications make treatment unsafe. Pricing is current as of August 2026 and subject to change.
