Honest timelines, the science behind why some areas wear off faster, and what you can actually do to extend your results.
It's the most common question we hear from new Botox clients in Apple Valley. "How long is this going to last?" The marketing answer is "3 to 4 months." The honest answer is more nuanced — and depends on a handful of factors most people don't realize.
Here's what we actually tell clients during consultations.
For most adults receiving standard Botox dosing in standard areas, results follow a predictable arc:
The "3 to 4 months" answer is true, but the lived experience varies. Some clients tell us they feel their Botox starting to wear off around month 2.5. Others get a full 5 months. Understanding why is the real conversation.
The biggest factor most people don't realize: muscle size and activity matter more than anything else.
Your masseter (jaw muscle) is huge and works constantly. Botox there can last 4 to 6 months because the muscle is so large that even partial recovery still gives a noticeable result. Your frontalis (forehead) is moderate. Crow's feet around the eyes? Smaller muscles, very active — they often "wear off" first because even slight muscle recovery shows visibly as fine lines return.
That's why a client might say "my forehead is still smooth but my crow's feet are back." It's not a treatment failure. It's anatomy.
Beyond the area treated, your individual body chemistry matters too:
If your Botox is wearing off in under 8 weeks, two things to check: was the dose appropriate, and is your provider experienced with your specific anatomy? It's worth a conversation.
You can't make Botox last forever, but a few things genuinely help:
Clients who treat every 3–4 months tend to maintain results longer than those who let it fully wear off between appointments. The muscles become accustomed to relaxation, and over time, you may actually need less product.
UV damage breaks down skin proteins and accelerates the appearance of lines coming back. SPF is the cheapest, most effective add-on to any injectable treatment.
Botox treats the muscle. Your skin still needs ingredients like peptides, retinoids, and vitamin C to stay smooth on the surface. Combining injectables with a real skincare routine is how you get that "what is she doing differently" result.
The biggest mistake we see in Apple Valley, Burnsville, and Eagan clients: waiting too long between appointments. Once your muscles fully reactivate and lines reset, you're starting over. Treating before full relapse is more effective and often requires less product.
Whether it's your first time or your tenth, we'll dose appropriately for your goals and anatomy.
Book NowAround month 3, expect to start seeing some movement return. This is normal and not a sign anything went wrong. It's a good signal to schedule your next appointment. We typically have clients return at the 3 to 3.5 month mark so we can re-treat before lines fully come back — that's the sweet spot for maintaining results.
"How long does Botox last" doesn't have a single answer. It depends on the area, your dosing, your metabolism, and how consistently you maintain treatment. Most clients land somewhere in the 3–4 month window. Some get more, some get less. The goal isn't maximizing duration at any cost — it's finding the rhythm that keeps you looking refreshed without overdoing it.
If you're new to Botox and curious whether it's right for you, the best next step is a consultation. We'll look at your face, talk through your goals, and give you a realistic timeline for what to expect.
