A step-by-step guide for RNs who want to add Botox and dermal filler to their career.
I get messages from nurses all over the Twin Cities asking the same thing: where do I even start? The path to becoming a nurse injector is clearer than most people think. It comes down to your license, the right training, real hands-on practice and support once you start. Here is the step-by-step version I share with every nurse who asks.
Aesthetic injector training is for licensed healthcare professionals. For nurses, that means an active, unencumbered RN license. Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physicians and dentists also train as injectors. You do not need years in dermatology or plastic surgery to start. Skills from any specialty, like assessment, sterile technique and patient teaching, carry straight into aesthetics.
Before you inject a single client, know how aesthetic injections work for your license. In Minnesota, registered nurses generally administer neurotoxins and dermal fillers under an order and delegation from a licensed prescriber, such as a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant, often through a medical director. Requirements can change, so check with the Minnesota Board of Nursing and your employer before you begin.
Most injectors start with neurotoxins like Botox, Jeuveau and Dysport. A strong foundation course should cover facial anatomy, patient assessment, dosing basics, safety and complications, and hands-on injections on live models. At ABL Institute, Tox Foundation runs over 2 days with theory in the morning and supervised injecting on live models.
Confidence comes from repetition. Look for a course with small classes, so an instructor can watch your technique, and plenty of time injecting live models instead of practice pads. After class, keep building your hours in a supervised setting until your hands feel steady and your assessments feel natural.
Once you are comfortable with the basics, the next step is advanced neurotoxin areas and dermal filler. Tox Advanced builds on your foundation with more treatment areas and refined technique. Filler Foundation + Advanced runs over 3 days and covers lips, cheeks, chin and more with hyaluronic acid fillers.
| Course | Length | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tox Foundation | 2 days | Nurses new to injecting |
| Tox Advanced | 2 days | Injectors ready for more areas and refinement |
| Filler Foundation + Advanced | 3 days | Injectors adding dermal filler |
A certificate proves you finished a course. Mentorship is what makes you a confident injector. The first few months after training are when questions come up with real clients. That is why every ABL Institute course includes mentorship with me:
Nurse injectors work in med spas, dermatology and plastic surgery practices, and some go on to build their own practice with a medical director. Whichever path you choose, make sure you have the right oversight, your own liability coverage, and a plan to keep learning.
The training itself can be completed in a matter of days. Tox Foundation is 2 days, and you can add Tox Advanced and filler training as you grow. Building real confidence takes longer, which is where hands-on hours and mentorship make the difference. Most nurses keep learning for their whole aesthetic career.
