Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: What You Need to Know

How the right laser, the right settings and a patch test make laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones.

By Nikita Musta, RN · 6 min read · Laser Hair Removal

One of the most common questions we hear at Aesthetic Beauty Lab is simple: is laser hair removal safe for my skin? For years, many people with darker skin tones were told laser was not for them. That advice is outdated. With the right laser and a careful plan, laser hair removal can be safe and effective for every skin type, from very fair to very deep.

Why skin type matters for laser

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle. Darker skin also has more pigment, so the laser has to reach the follicle without heating the surrounding skin. That is why the type of laser and the settings matter so much. Providers describe skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale, from Type I (very fair, always burns) to Type VI (deeply pigmented, rarely burns).

The laser that makes the difference

We use the GentleMax Pro Plus, which has two wavelengths. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength goes deeper and is designed for darker skin tones, Fitzpatrick types IV to VI. The 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength works well for lighter skin. Your provider chooses the wavelength and settings for your skin, not a one-size-fits-all setting.

Why we start with a patch test

Before your first full session, we test a small area to see how your skin responds. It is the simplest way to confirm your settings are right for you and to lower the risk of burns or dark spots. Read more on our Laser Hair Removal for All Skin Tones page.

Laser for razor bumps and ingrown hairs

Many clients come to us for razor bumps on the beard, neck, bikini line or underarms. Because laser reduces hair growth over time, there is less shaving and fewer ingrown hairs. For many people, this is the biggest change they notice.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients need about 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, because hair grows in cycles. Laser gives long-lasting hair reduction, and most people come in for occasional maintenance sessions after their series. Not sure what to expect for your skin and hair? Take our 60-second laser quiz.

How to prepare and care for your skin

  • Avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks before and after each session.
  • Shave the area the day before. Do not wax or pluck for 4 weeks before.
  • Skip retinoids and exfoliants on the area for a few days before.
  • Wear sunscreen every day and avoid hot tubs and heavy workouts for 24 hours after.
