A complete walk-through of laser hair removal — from prep to recovery — based on what we actually do with clients in our Apple Valley clinic.
Laser hair removal has become one of the most-requested services at Aesthetic Beauty Lab. Clients come in tired of shaving, waxing, dealing with ingrowns, or fighting stubble that returns within hours. Laser offers a real, permanent reduction in hair growth — but only if you understand how it works and what's actually required to get good results.
Here's the full picture, from your first consultation to your final session.
The laser delivers light energy that targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle. The light converts to heat, which damages the follicle's ability to regrow hair. This only works when the hair is in its active growth phase — which is why a single treatment doesn't get every hair on your body. Different follicles are in different phases at different times.
That's why laser hair removal requires a series of treatments. Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the body area, hair type, and skin type.
The hair follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it. Don't wax, pluck, thread, or use depilatory creams for at least 4 weeks before your first session. Shaving is fine — actually, it's required. Most clinics ask you to shave the treatment area within 24 hours of your appointment.
Tan skin (whether real or self-tan) changes how the laser reads pigment in your skin. We can't safely treat tan skin without risk of burns or pigment changes. Avoid sun on the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before, and let any self-tanner fully fade.
Retinoids should be paused 5 to 7 days before treatment. Some antibiotics (especially doxycycline) make you photosensitive and may need to be paused. Always disclose your medications at consultation — your provider will tell you what to skip.
You'll want clean skin with no lotion, deodorant, or sweat in the treatment area. Shower beforehand, come in with bare skin, and you're set.
If you've heard "it feels like a rubber band snap" — that's a pretty accurate description, especially for newer laser platforms. The Candela GentleMax Pro we use has a cooling system that fires cold air or coolant right before each pulse, which significantly reduces discomfort.
Most clients describe it as warm tingling with quick snaps. Coarser hair areas (bikini, underarms) are usually the most sensitive. Larger, less sensitive areas (legs, back) tend to feel much milder. Sessions are quick:
You'll wear protective eyewear during the session. The treatment itself is quick, methodical, and most clients are surprised by how tolerable it is.
If you're really sensitive to discomfort, you can apply a topical numbing cream 30 to 45 minutes before your session. Talk to us at consultation and we'll recommend one that's safe to use.
The treated area will feel warm — similar to a mild sunburn — for a few hours. You may see slight redness or follicular swelling (small bumps around each follicle), which usually resolves within 24 hours.
First 24–48 hours:
This is where most people get confused. Around days 7 to 14, you'll see what looks like new hair growth. It's not. Those are the treated hairs being shed by your body. They'll fall out on their own — you can help them along with light exfoliation or gentle scrubbing in the shower. Don't pluck them out.
Between sessions, you can shave as needed. Just no waxing, plucking, threading, or epilating.
Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions for optimal reduction, with maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months after that. Here's a realistic timeline:
Hormonal areas (face, chin, abdomen) often need more sessions and ongoing maintenance because the follicles are continuously stimulated by hormones. That's biology — even a perfect laser series won't override hormonal hair growth.

Book ConsultationModern laser platforms like the Candela GentleMax Pro can safely treat a wide range of skin tones. The most ideal candidates have darker, coarser hair on lighter skin (more pigment contrast = stronger laser absorption in the follicle). Clients with darker skin tones can also be treated safely, but we adjust settings carefully and may need more sessions.
The two situations where laser isn't ideal: very light blonde, red, gray, or white hair (insufficient pigment for the laser to target), and currently tan or sunburned skin. If you have light hair, IPL or electrolysis may be alternatives — ask at consultation.
Laser hair removal is one of the highest-satisfaction treatments we offer in Apple Valley, but it only works if you commit. That means showing up to every session, following pre- and post-care, and being patient through the timeline. The clients who get the best results are the ones who treat it like a real medical-grade treatment, not a one-time fix.
If you've spent years dealing with razor burn, ingrowns, or constant maintenance, laser is genuinely life-changing. Most clients tell us they wish they had started years sooner.
